Haydn wrote a quartet that tricks its audience into thinking it’s over, only to keep going. Shostakovich buried his own name in the notes of a string quartet and told the world it was a war memorial. Tchaikovsky wrote his Third Quartet in the weeks after losing someone he may have loved more than he ever admitted publicly, and said almost nothing about it. Between the chamber works, string arrangements of songs by Taylor Swift, Zara Larsson, and Robyn, artists who know something about the distance between a public face and a private life.
